Comment – Parallel Madness

Larry Pickering, that extremely entertaining cartoonist for the AUSTRALIAN newspaper, once paid comment to the ab­surdity of our two-airline policy by depicting the fuselages of two 727s linked together by a common wing with the name and livery of Ansett on one fuselage and TAA on the other. The cartoon had no caption, indeed it did not need one for the meaning of such a parody of the Australian air traveller is obvious.

Recently I had to fly back from Coolangatta to Sydney after attending a weekend seminar held on the Gold Coast. I had some business to attend to on Sunday and was hoping that there would be a flight back in the late afternoon or early evening, a flight that would allow me to use most of Sunday daytime to my advantage and yet get me home at a sane hour.

Checking the schedules I sadly noted that the only flights were in the vicinity of 12. 45 pm and 9. 15 pm – I either miss half the day in Surfers or spend the evening waiting for the late flight that would see me home not that long before mid­night. Begrudgingly I settled for the 9. 15 pm service.
