The Hunt Continues

The war in Europe may have ended 35 years ago, but for many the hunt continues.

“SOME OF OUR AIRMEN . . . ARE NO LONGER MISSING” is an hour long documentary television film made by Nomad Films International, which links the humane and responsible work of the Royal Netherlands Air Force Recovery Unit presently being carried out In the lysselmeer (Zuider Zee), with the bombing missions of the RAF and the 8th USAAF over Occupied Europe during World War II.

During World War II, Holland was for military aircraft, German and Allied alike, and the Sargasso Sea was for ancient sailing ships. Between 1940/45, more than 7000 aircraft crashed in Holland. These figures include 3000 aircraft belonging to the RAF and Commonwealth air forces, 1200 belonging to the USAAF and 2500 German aircraft.

Most of these aircraft crashed on Dutch soil, and there is nothing left of these planes. Usable parts were cannibalised by the Germans and sent back to German aircraft factories to be used in the construction of Luftwaffe aircraft.
