Super Stang
Along with the famed Spitfire and Focke Wulf 190, North American Aviation’s P-51 Mustang will go down in history as one of the most successful fighters of the Second World War.
Following the cessation of hostilities in 1945 the P-51 Mustang went on to again win laurels in the Korean campaign and served with numerous air arms right up into the 1960s. It is not surprising then that this most venerable of World War II combat designs should still be the object of the designer’s pen as late as 1971.
In the four year period between 1968 and 1971, two separate companies forged ahead with plans to rejuvenate the basic Mustang design (sans original power plant) into a capable Counter Insurgency aircraft suitable for Third World air arms. The result of their work was the Cavalier Mustang Ill and Piper’s Enforcer.
