Singapore SST Goes as BA Belt Tightens:

British Airways, in conjunction with Singapore Airlines withdrew their London to Singapore Concorde service on November 1. Load factors for the route were a disappointing 40 per cent this year as against 57 per cent for 1979 operations. The London to Bahrain service has also been scuttled. Concorde has had a dismal year with the trans-Atlantic sector being the only money maker (just) amongst a small number of routes open to the SST. Air France has been gaining little financial joy from its various South American routes and Branniff ceased its Dallas to London via Washington DC ran earlier this year as a result of rapidly rising fuel costs for what is the thirstiest airliner in the skies. British Airways itself is going through a traumatic period where income is well below expectations and fuel costs are demanding ever higher load factors just to break even. Consequently over the past year some 2500 staff have been let go, most have left and have not been specifically replaced and BA also plans to advance the grounding of the remaining VC-1o fleet. Two VC-1Os are still in service but these will both be disposed of by April 1981. One Boeing 747 is up for immediate sale, the introduction of the first Boeing 757 may be postponed by a year while the commercial Chinook purchase may also be delayed.

Best Farnborough Yet Boosts Trade:

England turned on its best weather yet for a Farnborough Air Show and as if to mimic the air of goodwill displayed by Mother Nature, the aerospace community responded with what is now estimated as orders to the value of one billion dollars. Society of British Aerospace Companies inform us that more than 7000 press and 200,000 people attended the eight-day show which featured the most diverse range of aircraft yet featured at Farnborough. If the British keep this up they will soon be providing a true rival for the Paris Air Show which to all intents and purposes has always been the premier air show.
