World Airpower Guide for 1980
Whenever a nation chooses to flex its muscles to either impress or deter a neighbour you can be certain it will opt for a display of airpower. At the turn of the century the battleship was the supreme equaliser, a hundred years earlier it was the mounted cavalry. Today that muscle is made up of MiGs, Phantoms, B-52s, Eagles and the mighty ICBM.
Every nation has an air force ranging from the superpower league down to the small yet locally effective forces comprising aircraft often many decades old. In some cases it is difficult to classify each particular aircraft type to its specific role. Transport is a general category that in some air arms also covers light trainers and observation aircraft while Ground Support might also encompass recce-type aircraft.
