Undoubtedly the submarine has become one of the most formidable and effective weapons of warfare in the 20th century. Indeed, the German Navy U-boat “wolf packs” of World War II took their toll on Allied shipping in the North Atlantic. Today, the submarine has become larger, more expensive, far more powerful and longer ranged. But the single most important difference today is the armament.

The superpowers operate the largest of these underwater giants which, propelled by nuclear reactors, can tote up to two dozen nuclear missiles within their hulls. As a result of the SALT agreements, these weapons have been restricted in their numbers, but retain an effective range of between 4000 and 6000 nautical miles and a payload sufficient enough to wipe out any major city in the world.
