Spruce Goose finds a new home

The Spruce Goose is the world’s biggest and most mysterious aircraft. Twenty-six years ago, the flying boat and its equally mysterious creator – billionaire Howard Hughes – went into hiding.

The fate of Howard Hughes became known in 1976 when his death was announced. Now the wraps are being taken off the $60 million Spruce Goose kept hidden away as secretly as he kept himself out of public view.

Since 1954, the Spruce Goose, made of birch and spruce, has been in a Long Beach hangar. But the hangar must be torn down to make way for an oil terminal and the company controlling Hughes’ empire has decided to make the Spruce Goose a tourist attraction.
