and EB/ were both 707-138Bs which were later sold to Braniff. The 1388 was virtually a "hot rod" version of the 707 and was a delight to fly. (Eric Allen.)

In Australian Service – Boeing 707

Part five in a series examining the airliners that established civil aviation in Australia.

The Boeing 707 undoubtedly ranks as one of the most significant transport aircraft of all time. While many fine airliners have entered service over the past few decades very few can lay claim to have brought about such a fundamental change in mass intercontinental transportation as the 707.

Large piston-engined airliners had reached the technical limits of development and in some notable cases were over-developed, giving rise to unreliable performance. The heavy turbo prop airliner did not attain the dominance expected of it in some quarters, mainly because of the relatively early arrival of the generation of large four-engined jet aircraft.

Although the de Havilland Comet led the US manufacturers in the race to be the first jet airliner to enter service the unfortunate series of accidents which befell it put paid to any chance of British dominance in this field. In addition, the Comet had too limited a passenger capacity and range to be a serious contender.
