Conceived as a V Bomber replacement at a time when it was becoming obvious that future strike aircraft would have to penetrate hostile territory either at extremely high altitude at supersonic speeds or either subsonic "in the weeds", the British Aircraft Corporation TSR.2 was indeed an excellent design which in retrospect would have enjoyed a long and capable career. The program was finally axed by that deadliest of foes, the dreaded Bureaucrat in favour of American F-111s. Ultimately, however, the RAF even lost their 111 funding and instead ended up with an inferior marque of Phantom.
The TSR-2 Story
The Rise and Fall of The TSR 2
Pilots still talk about it . . . some politicians look for a sand dune in which to bury their heads In shame when it’s mentioned… and its ghost still walks the skies whenever brilliant supersonic; design is discussed.
It is – or was – the superb British Aircraft Corporation TSR. 2, the aircrc:1ft born of the Vickers-English Electric team as a light bomber after a British Government contract awarded back in 1959.
It first flew in September 1964 and only lived for a year before it was smothered to death by a mixture of Labour Government obsession with decimating aviation and defence spending, devilment by a system of committees made LIP of everyone but the right sort of expert, and inter-Service rivalry.
