Let Your Ears Have Wings
Australian Aviation proudly presents part one of a three part series explaining the fascinating word of AIRBAND monitoring.
Retail sales of receiving equipment capable of monitoring public service radio bands is currently undergoing a boom period, and some of the most consistent sellers are AIRBAND radios.
V. H. F. portables, scanning receivers, and shortwave communications receivers are fast becoming “must-have” items for those with an interest in aviation. Every weekend at Sydney Airport, in a public carpark near the Control Tower, a steady stream of onlookers arrive to watch. . . and listen to airliners. Roughly, six in ten vehicles parked here are equipped with some form of V. H. F. airband radio receiver. On Sundays, when air traffic into Sydney is varied and interesting, parking spaces are at a premium!
If you own an airband receiver, do you tune it aimlessly, not knowing where to find the tower, approach, and countless other frequencies? Some of you know a great deal about V. H. F. airband radio but are puzzled about how to listen to airliners once they’ve flown more than a couple of hundred miles away, en route to international destinations.
