Ansett's DC-9, seen here in appropriate Air Vanuatu livery, has now been replaced by a 737-200 with an emphasis on daylight flight departures for the Pacific island destination. Some interesting Ansett DC-9 data reveal that CZA has the highest hours and landings, 38,790 hrs and 43,336 cycles. CAL has the lowest hours with only 25,223 hrs and 28,215 cycles. A Day in a Nine
John Vogel bids farewell to what will always be remembered as one of Ansett’s most effective aircraft
The 24th of November 1981 will remain in my memory as an unusual day, unusual in that I made six trips to Canberra and back to Sydney in the cockpit of a DC-9-30 VH-CZL.
By the time of publication, CZL will no longer be with Ansett. There will probably be no DC-9s in the Ansett service. They will have been sold to airlines in the U. S. A. and their place was taken by the new Boeing 737-200 aircraft, 12 in all registered VH-CZM to CZX, carrying on the CZ registrations where the DC-9s left off, precisely at CZL. The DC-9 registrations commenced with CZA.
In order to get the feel of the aircraft, DC-9 Flight Captain A. A. Boomsma suggested and arranged my tour around the Sydney/Canberra sector in order to experience the maximum number of takeoffs and landings as possible, virtually within the confines of the Sydney area.
