Update – Boeing 767

The 767 programme was launched back in July 1978 when United Airlines announced a launch order for 30 aircraft; this was subsequently increased to 39 with the first aircraft entering service in September 1982. Other large orders received at the time were from American Airlines (30) and Delta (20), both groups powered by GE engines while United opted for Pratt & Whitney JT9D-7R4s.

The five Ansett aircraft will be powered by General Electric CF6-80A turbofans of 47,900 lb thrust and will have a maximum takeoff weight of 300,000 lb (136,000 kg) allowing a maximum range with reserves of 2900 nautical miles. This can be extended later if required as Boeing will be rolling out a 335,000 lb (152,000 kg) version in 1984 capable of sectors out to 4215 nm. This increase in gross weight is largely taken up by extra fuel uplift and requires only minimal changes to the basic aircraft such as strengthened flaps, undercarriage and brakes. In other words, if Ansett should at a later date find itself in a position to use a long-range aircraft it can retrofit its existing 767s at minimal expense.
