Has the DofA Become a Luxury That General Aviation Can No Longer Afford?

No one can deny that these are difficult economic times. However, for general aviation, It is nothing short of disastrous. There are aircraft distributors in Australia who have not sold a new aircraft in the past 12 months.

It would be difficult to draw a parallel with this in any other industry. The economic climate and wage freeze have had a stabilising effect on costs in many industries – but not aviation! Aviation costs have continued to rise at an alarming rate.

The major source of these increases are Government-induced – air navigation charges, 20% sales tax on aircraft and parts and the ever-increasing cost of fuel. These form the major part of the operating costs of general aviation aircraft. With the scarcity of surplus cash, it is understandable that a fragile industry like aviation is one of the first to suffer in difficult economic times. The Government, by increasing aviation costs at the same time, have compounded this problem.
