Boeing Vertol Examine AEW Chinook:
As a response to requests by the British Government during the Falklands conflict, Boeing Vertol examined the feasibility of an Airborne Early Warning version of the CH-47 Chinook The type would use the same Thorn-EMI Search water radar as fitted to Westland’s AEW Sea Kings. Boeing Vertol planned to fit the radar scanner into the rear ramp, the ramp then being lowered in the patrol mode to have the scanner hung below the primary airframe and provide full 360-degree coverage. The AEW Chinook would carry a crew of six and would also use four 500 gl cabin fuel tanks which would allow a 7 hr loiter endurance at 14,000 feet, 100 nm from base. The project was abandoned though, following the successful flight trials of the AEW Sea King.
