Expensive Noises!
In early March the Fokker DR1 Triplane replica N864DR was found to have internal engine damage following the failure of the master rod bearing. A new engine, a Continental radial of 220 hp, will probably be required. The Triplane, on permanent loan to the Australian War Memorial, is operated for flying displays by the RAAF museum at Port Cook, Victoria.
The B-25 Mitchell N8196H suffered an engine failure just after take-off at Ballarat, Victoria just before the start of the Phillips Aerobatic Challenge during March. A replacement engine was obtained from the operator of the Essendon-based Catalina, VH-EXG. The following weekend the newly restored Sea Fury, VH-HFG, made a gear-up forced landing some 14 miles south of Toowoomba, Queensland en route to Schofields, NSW as a result of falling oil pressure. The pilot/owner, Guido Zuccoli, was not injured but the Sea Fury will need repairs before it flies again.
