Airtest- Dornier 228-200

Advanced Technology Comes to The Unpressurised Commuter Market

Whoever organises the Sydney weather must have a historical bent. The welcome for the sales team from one of the world’s greatest manufacturers of waterborne aircraft could only be described as wet! It poured! Sydney in the late Spring can be delightful but last November was within a few points of the wettest on record and for the period of the demonstration, the weather was characterised by low cloud, strong winds and plenty of water. Yet something was slightly amiss as the subject of the demonstration, the Dornier 228, is in no way a seaplane.

The Dornier company can trace its history back to the period of the First World War, when Claudius Dornier was assigned by the Zeppelin organisation to concentrate on heavier than aircraft. Between the wars, the Dornier Wal series of flying boats pioneered many of the world’s overwater air routes and the twelve-engined Do-X (X – the unknown quantity) of 1930 was probably the largest practical aircraft of its day. Heavy military aircraft production continued throughout the Second World War. Since that period Dornier have produced a series of light transports and participated both as partners and as subcontractors in a number of military aircraft and space programmes, the most recent being the Alpha Jet.

The Dornier presentation for Australian Aviation was very slick and professional. The team, headed by Peter Klonk, a retired Lieutenant Colonel from the Luftwaffe, and including Dornier Chief Test Pilot, Frank Tuytjens, and representatives of the Australian agents, Aviation Marketing Services, gave an extensive briefing on the design philosophy and programme status of the aircraft.
