Nowadays, more than a third of the total flying time of Williamtown-based 77 Sqdn, is occupied in flying Fleet Support duty. By the time a Mirage flies from Williamstown to Jervis Bay it has little endurance left with which to provide in-depth training with the Navy. Additionally 77 Sqdn. is now overwhelmed with its new responsibilities of having to train all future Mirage plots now that the OCU is converting to F-182s. No. 77 Sqdn, presently has some 51 aircraft on inventory!

Problems in Australia’s Deep Sea ASW Defence Capability
Pity the poor Heads of the Armed Forces in Australia. Pity those who serve under them, the men and women who have volunteered to give their lives- if necessary- to the defence of our country, for it seems they are destined to be always deprived of the political foresight and capital equipment required to do their job properly.
For years we’ve heard nothing from Canberra but news of cutbacks and of delays in decisions to purchase equipment. . . not for just any one of the Services but for all three. These decisions (or the lack of them) are usually taken on political grounds and against the wishes of the service chiefs and they have inevitably left gaps often large ones in Australia’s defence capabilities. Whether it be severe limits on the number of rounds the crews of Leopard tanks can fire, or a delay in ordering tankers for the RAAF, or the scrapping of the Fleet Air Arm, the result is always the same. . . reduced capability and readiness.
The term “no foreseeable threat” is a popular catchcry in Canberra at the moment, just as it was in the 1930s. . . .
