The Soviets had been working on a high by-pass turbofan engine for more than fifteen years and had at different times during the seventies tried to acquire GE and RR technology. The Lotarev O18T, of 51,6501b takeoff thrust powers the giant An-124 Ruslan transport and is the first such engine to be publicly shown by the Soviet Union. This engine is now expected to be the forerunner for a whole family of similar powerplants which no doubt will also find their way aboard a later version of the IL-86 wide-bodied Aeroflot civil transport.

Cac, Hawker DeHavilland Merger a Boost for Australian Aerospace:

The recent merger between Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation and Hawker de Havilland will now allow both companies access to new markets previously not open to them. In aerospace, big is beautiful in terms of manufacturing and bidding capability and of course the ability to generate finance for key projects to ensure growth in the years ahead.

During May, Sydney-based Hawker deHavilland acquired CAC for an estimated $40m with the merger becoming effective from July 1st 1985. The new organisation will employ 3,350 people and is expected to have had 84/85 turnover of more than $160m. HdH is primarily based at Bankstown though it does operate facilities at Salisbury, South Australia and has Western Australia’s largest defence maintenance establishment situated at Perth airport. Around 47% of the present activity is specifically for the Government while 40% of HdH’s earnings are generated by export products, principally offset contracts with Sikorsky, Boeing. Airbus, McDonnell Douglas and Westland.
