Regional Airline Directory

The years 1979 through 1982 saw Australia’s Third Level Airline passenger uplift grow at an average of more than 15% per year. For the twelve months ending December 31st 1982, passenger uplift was 999,042 and it was expected that 1983 would see 1 million passengers carried for the first time in a twelve month period. This however was not to be the case as recently released provisional figures from the Department of Aviation for 1983 show an uplift of only 955,314 passengers. This was a drop of 4. 5% on the previous twelve months.

In spite of this fall the feeling in the industry is that 1983 for most operators was a good year and that the 1984 passenger uplift will carry on in the same vein. In the early 1980’s Commuter Airline, passenger figures were inflated by the transfer of a number of F27 routes by the Major Domestic Operators. While in the main there was no growth in the domestic airline industry primarily as an effect of the recession and drought, the Commuter Airlines were carrying more and more passengers. With this at an end, it is therefore not surprising that there was a d(op of 4. 5% in passengers carried. Over the same period the Major Domestic Operators experienced a drop of 6. 9% in their passenger traffic.

In terms of passengers carried the leading Commuter Operator is Air Queensland. It should be remembered that Air Queensland operate with a full airline licence and with a supplementary airline licence. As their traffic patterns change so do the numbers of passengers carried under each licence, as shown below
