Recovery Parachutes for Ultralight Aircraft

The statistical evidence in favour of recovery parachutes is steadily increasing. In a recent article (Ultralight Aircraft, February 1985) the manufacturers of one type claim a saving of 15 people in 13 accidents in the USA.

Other manufacturers make similar claims. These claims do not tell the whole story. There have been cases of aircraft crashing, even though fitted with recovery parachutes. These cases have not been reported as extensively as the others.

Recovery parachutes fall into two main categories – deployed by hand and deployed with assistance. Those deployed with assistance use a variety of methods:
