Project Winnin Offers Unique Opportunity for Australian Defence Industry
The further development of Project Winnin, the Australian-designed anti-ship missile decoy hovering rocket concept to a production phase is highly dependent on collaboration with the United States and access to US technology, the Defence Minister, Mr Kim Beazley, said recently. His remarks, some of them in parliament, reinforced efforts he made in Washington in late August seeking US Government cooperation in pressing ahead with the development of the unique Winnin system whereby the quickly-launched rocket hovering away from its ship would lure away sea-skimming radar-housing missiles launched from perhaps 50-80 kilometres away.
Mr Peter Hider, who was the Assistant Secretary on the Tactical Fighter (F/A-18) Project, switched in mid-year to co-ordinate Winnin’s future as Assistant Secretary, Special Project Development, of a new branch established to handle Winnin. Other key players in the project are Mr Murray Evans, formerly the Winning Project Director at the Aeronautical Research Laboratory (ARL) in Melbourne and Mr Roy Kane, formerly Deputy and now Project Director at the Weapons Systems Research Laboratory at Salis- bury, SA. Mr Roger Craeser, who was the Canberra-based Winnin Project manager representing the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) remains a key adviser on the project.
