The RAAF's first Pave Tack equipped F-111C test flies over Amberley. Ten Pave Tack units will be purchased to equip all 20 F-111C strike aircraft with the final aircraft mad being completed late in 1987. The RAAF is also examining the various USAF options for digitising their own F-111A & E fleet though a firm decision on what option to take in this regard will most certainly wait till after the release of the Dibb Report in the first half of next year

More Punch to Raaf’s F-111 Strike Force:

The first RAAF F-111C strike aircraft to be modified in Australia with the Pave Tack target acquisition and tracking system returned to operational service during late September.

The Pave Tack system, when integrated with the F-111C’s onboard radar and navigational avionics, enables the aircrew to identify and track targets and accurately deliver a range of guided and unguided munitions This improvement in accuracy will greatly increase the F-111’s chances of survival in a hostile environment. The Pave Tack system also has an infra-red detection capability which enables accurate delivery at night and in adverse weather conditions of laser-guided and conventional bombs The modification also incorporates the capability to deliver the Harpoon anti-shipping missile and the GBU-15, a 2,000lb glide bomb with an electro-optical guidance system (refer June 84 AA). In terms of hardware, the Pave Tack system includes a sensor pod fitted to the underside of the aircraft in the weapons bay, a number of new electronic components, and new cockpit displays and controls.
