The volume of air traffic to Broome surged to a level where at one stage 57 aircraft a day were arriving and almost 8,000 passengers passed through in 14 days. An ominous portent was the passage of a Japanese reconnaissance aircraft over Broome at 3. 00 pm on 2 March 1942. After making three circuits at 9,000ft the aircraft left the area.
