Full engine testing of the new Pratt & Whitney PW3005 engine has now commenced. Planned for certification in 1987 the 5,000shp Class engine will be available in both turboshaft and turboprop versions and will be available to power the new V-22 Osprey tiltrotor helicopter in addition to advanced versions of the P-3, C-130 and E-2 aircraft. In each of these applications, the PW3005 would consume around a third less fuel while providing more power and far less maintenance manhours per engine flight hour than existing 1950s technology engines.

GE F404 Engine Surpassing All Maintenance Goals:
Maintenance man-hours per flight hour for the GE F404 engine on USN F-18s are almost two-thirds less than the industry benchmark, the GE J79 as used on the MDC F-4 Phantom. The Phantoms mature J79s usually need 3. 0hrs maintenance for each flight hour while the latest Navy deployment saw the relatively immature F404 logging 0. 9hrs per flight hour, well below the goal of 1. 2. Additionally the shop visit rate was down to only 1. 1 per 1,000 engine flight hours which the Navy described as a “non-event” compared with experience with TF30 and J79 powerplants currently in use.
Overall all parts and labour costs for all maintenance per engine flight hour are running at less than half the level experienced with the J79 of the USN and the Atar in use with the RAAF.
