The elevators on this McDonnell Douglas MD-80 twinjet were made by Hawker de Havilland at its Bankstown facility. HdH has been the sole world source for such elevators since 1975 and hopefully will continue to build them right into the nineteen nineties.

New Offset Directive a Major Boost to The Australian Aerospace Industry
Effective March 1 Australia will at last have a definitive policy for handling the potentially large volume of industrial offsets generated by civil and military aircraft orders.
The new policy clarifies many of the grey areas of the offsets programme and serves to guarantee a minimum level of 30% offsets against each and every future aerospace purchase valued at more than $2. 5m. Aerospace of course is not the only sector of the Australian manufacturing industry to gain from the new policy as shipbuilding, computers, and telecommunications equipment also feature heavily in the list of applicable projects. More than half of the total offset workload though is aerospace orientated, indeed a share that presently is responsible for around $50m revenue year which in turn is estimated to provide between two and two and a half thousand jobs.
