C-130A’s for Ethiopia

The recent well publicised gift by the Australian Government of 2 ex RAAF C-130A’s for use by the Red Cross in Ethiopia has highlighted the fact that it is nearly 8 years since these aircraft were taken out of service and placed in storage. Of the 12 C- 130A’s flown by No 36 Squadron RAAF all except 2 were flown to Laverton for long-term storage. Over the years there have been a number of abortive attempts to sell the aircraft with the first being shortly after they were withdrawn from service in September 1978. At the time all 12 aircraft were allocated United States registrations, however when the sale was cancelled these were removed from the C-130A’s.

The following relates the movements of these aircraft since late 1978.
