Col Pay’s Spitfire Flies!

The really big news in this issue of Warbirds is that the Supermarine Spitfire VIII of well-known Warbird owner and pilot, Col Pay, made its first flight on December 27 following a lengthy rebuild. The Spitfire, VH-HET, made the first flight at Scone, NSW and aside from a minor undercarriage warning light problem all went well.

This particular machine had not flown for nearly 40 years and it is to Col Pay’s credit, and that of his engineers, that the Spit was rebuilt and put back into the air. For many years the aircraft was owned by Sid Marshall and on lease to the Camden Aviation Museum. Acquired by Col Pay it has taken many hours of work and much chasing of parts even though the Spit was basically intact when obtained.
