India Buys The Hermes And Additional Sea Harriers:

India has purchased the ex-Royal Navy carrier, Hermes, for a reported $A100m. The 33,000-tonne aircraft carrier, which was reported by the Argentinian press to have been sunk no less than six times during the course of the Falklands conflict will be extensively updated and refurbished in Britain before being handed over to the Indian Navy in 1987.

Meanwhile to equip both Hermes and India’s current carrier Vikrant (a sister ship to HMAS Sydney & Melbourne) the Indian Navy is expected to order a further batch of BAe Sea Harriers. India already has 19 Sea Harriers on order with 1 0 currently in service and will require an inventory of at least 33 to fulfil the requirement of two air groups, a training unit and allow for attrition.
