Air Safety – Flying an Ice Block

Paul Middleton has been a DofA Examiner since 1978 and now has now lodged over 9,000 hours total aeronautical experience. During recent discussions with his colleagues in the Safety Promotion Section on the subject of winter flying, he told of an incident involving himself that seemed to fit the ‘bill’ for an article for Air Safety. He was convinced to relate the story so that our readers could share his experience and the lessons he learned.

What is it that a charter operator likes better than eating, drinking or lying in on a Sunday morning? You’ve got it- an airline strike! All those stranded passengers just dying to get to their destinations and all were willing to pay.

The work flowed but the boss pulled rank just because he owned the aeroplanes and took the Cessna 310 which was my normal transportation leaving me with an elderly Cessna 182; one engine, comparatively slow and all that non-inspiring stuff.
