Boeing’s 737-300

As these words are written a new jetliner is entering Australian domestic airline service. That new aircraft is Boeing’s hot selling 737-300 and the impact it will have upon Australian aviation in the decade to come will be profound to say the least.

The reasons the latest production version of Boeing’s smallest model will offer both Ansett and Australian Airlines so much are numerous but principally revolve around enhanced flexibility and unsurpassed fuel efficiency. Never before has any airline, here or abroad, operated a small short to medium-haul twinjet with the extremely low seat/kilometre costs of the 737-300. Neither has any airline had an airliner of this size that has had virtually transcontinental legs that in the past have been solely the domain of the large twin and trijets.
