John Spiers Interviews Don Kendell

While many other once substantial commuter airlines have withered and died or been absorbed, Kendell Airlines, based at Wagga NSW, has steadily expanded operations in NSW, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia. With the recent takeover of the Airlines of South Australia routes, Don Kendell has found it necessary to employ about 25 extra pilots per year – a number almost rivalling the major airlines and far in advance of any other regional or commuter airline. Three Second-hand Metros have been added to the fleet in addition to the three 340s. Three Metros and a Saab will be based in Melbourne, with a further three Metros and a Saab in Adelaide with one Metro in reserve. With Ansett handing over its F27 routes in the deregulated State of South Australia to Kendell’s Saab SF340 and Metros, John Spiers asked Don Kendell how he felt US experience of airline deregulation would be reflected in Australia.
