British Aerospace: The Outlook After Privatisation

In Australia, the controversy regarding the privatisation of large government-owned enterprises such as Telecom, the Commonwealth Bank, Qantas and TAA is a contentious issue. The debate concerning the desirability or otherwise of such a move for these organisations is bound to be a continuing one leading right up to and beyond the next Federal election.

In Britain also, much discussion accompanied Government moves to divest themselves of some hallowed national enterprises. In this context, it is interesting to look at one of the most highly regarded aerospace companies in the world and to see what change, if any, privatisation has made. The company of course is British Aerospace, a vital contributor to the British economy and a fundamental part of that country’s wish to maintain leadership in a high-technology industry in these fiercely competitive times.
