Helicopters and balloons dominate this issue’s new allocations. Of the eighteen helicopters in the listing, two are new Robinson R22B Beta models, EFK and JOB, whilst the only other new helicopter, TVG, is an Aerospatiale Squirrel for a Western Australian Company. The two second-hand Squirrels, HCF, a single engined variant and HJK, a twin, both have Malaysian histories and HCF operates out of Westmead Hospital on Medivac flights serving Sydney’s western suburbs. JAV joins the very small fleet of Bell 4 7J’s in Australia and comes from New Zealand where it was operated by Helicopters (NZ). Another New Zealand import is FJE, a Bell 2068 which was owned by Helicopter Specialties in Auckland. It now joins the Helitrans fleet in North Queensland. An older Robinson R22, two Hughes 269s, a Sud Lama and no less than seven Bell 47Gs, one a Kawasaki-built model, make up the rest of the helicopters. Five American-built Firefly balloons appear along with ten English Cameron and Colt models. Four Australian-made Kavanaghs make a total of nineteen new balloon entries. Kavanagh has been making as produced 36 in the last six years balloons in Australia since 1969 and h and with the sport of ballooning on the up and up they are planning for as many as 30 per annum in the near future. This progressive company is also hoping to have the first special-shaped balloon in the air next year. In the form of a gas bottle, it will follow an English trend for advertising which has seen everything from milk bottles to spark plugs take to the air. Most of the balloons listed have been in the country for a number of years but are now being put on the aircraft register due to a DofA requirement. All the Bizjets listed have been well documented in Gordon Reid’s Traffic section whilst the other heavy metal include the first two Boeing 737-300s for Australian Airlines, the second ATR42 for Air Queensland and the sixth Boeing 767 for Qantas. It is interesting to note that only one single engined import appears, Mooney SJT. This aircraft actually arrived in Sydney from Tontouta on its delivery flight on the 23rd of April last year and has remained unsold with its importers, Adams Aviation at Bankstown since then.
