Simulators nowadays take over much of the hands on flying as pilots proceed through their training regime though Qantas, as does Australian and Ansett, still employ Avalon to good use in honing their aircrew skills
Closing the Gap
General Aviation and the military are traditional sources of airline recruits. In Australia, the prospect of flying for Qantas usually has droves of young Cessna and RAAF pilots reaching for their Sunday best. However, while many are called, few are chosen. In this special article Peter Gamble analyses just what is required in your attempt at . . .
Pilots who aspire to join Qantas usually make it their business to find out the necessary steps involved prior to making their initial application. There is, however, a certain amount of folklore that drifts through general aviation lounges and military messes and this writer has sought to separate the facts and offer readers some worthwhile guidelines.
It’s true that the successful applicant will report for their first day’s duty at the Qantas Jet Base adjacent to Sydney’s Kingsford Smith Airport. For the next 35 weeks the trainee S/Os (Second Officers) will spend most of their time inside the Ground Training Centre.
