Defence Update
Jindalee Gets the Go-Ahead
A Project Definition Study will determine the further design and development of the Australian-developed Over-the-HorizonRadar (OTHR), which to date has been the experimental Jindalee project. It also will determine which are the best locations from a technical viewpoint to site three more OTHRs, other than the present one at Alice Springs.
The Defence Minister, Mr Kim Beazley, announced the go-ahead for a network of long-range radars (capable to picking up targets some thousands of kilometres away) in October. He said the entire network, which included upgrading the present line of transmitting and receiving stations in Central Australia, was expected to cost around $500 million. (The Shadow Defence Minister and National Party leader, Mr Ian Sinclair recently disagreed with the Government decision and said a Liberal-NP Government would only stay with the present OTHR and put the money planned for three more systems into Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft).
