A Close Call!

The road from Dead Cow to Dairy Flat was one of tribulation for the 16th Wing (New Zealand) of the Confederate Air Force during a November delivery flight.

Earlier, Wing Leader Colonel Allan Rowell had successfully negotiated the bargain basement purchase of a Beech C-45 Expeditor at Plains, near Wichita. The object was to get the little twin back to Dairy Flat Airfield near Auckland for use as the Wing’s flagship and personnel transporter. The Wing spent $NZ100,000 on outfitting it with long-range ranks and a new port engine just overhauled by Fiat of Italy. The other engine still had half a life and was left in place.
