Airbus Won’t Rush Stretched A320 Twinjet:
That Airbus Industrie will eventually stretch their hot selling standard body A320 is certain. Like Boeing with the 727 twenty years before, Al realises that there are probably a thousand additional long-term sales to be had with a stretch of their present airframe.
Spokesmen for Airbus now confirm though that this definitely won’t take place till the A330 and A340 projects are fully funded and in operation. Both projects will weigh heavily upon Al’s technical and financial resources during the coming five years. The plan as outlined by Airbus is to certify the A330 and A340 and then to study the use of IAE’s new Superfan high bypass ratio ducted fan with a stretched A320 fuselage. This would lower fuel specifics by as much as 20% and so provide a viable counter to the emergence of propfan technology as per the MDC MD-90 series and Boeing 757 family of aircraft. Airbus also confirmed that the IAE Superfan would also be of great use aboard the ultra-long-range A340 and may ultimately re-place the standard CFM56 and IAE V2500 turbofans presently destined for this aircraft. Both types will find it difficult to be able to generate sufficient thrust to cater for the expected weight growth of this aircraft which is why IAE are pushing ahead with the development of their Superfan. An analysis of the Superfan was given on p7 of our Sept issue.
