Reports of Pc-9 Performance Degradation Untrue:
Newspaper reports that the performance of the RAAF’s new Pilatus PC-9 trainers has been heavily compromised are totally unfounded, according to senior Defence Force officers.
Due to the RAAF’s insistence of being able to operate with low pressure tyres off grass strips the basic PC-9 has had to have a redesigned undercarriage more akin to that of the PC-7. This has resulted in a slightly larger assembly which protrudes fractionally below the drag line of the underside of the wing. RAAF officials confirm that the resultant drag is minimal and worth ‘only three or four knots at cruise speeds. Low-pressure tyres are required for use out of Point Cook and perhaps for later use out of unprepared strips in the COIN and FAC roles in support of ground forces in the north of Australia. The RAAF is acquiring 67 PC-9s with the first of type entering service later this year.
