1986 a Better Year for Air Safety

As the year draws to a close it is nice to report that 1986 (till early December at least) was a far safer year in the air then 1985. Of interest though, and we can jest a little this issue as after all it is the silly season, is a recent report in Avmark that illustrated just how safe flying really is. •

It appears that for 1985 there were more Americans killed on bicycles than in aircraft. Yes, some 904 unfortunates met their end while cycling as against 644 in aircraft. As most of the cyclists were killed by cars it is also worth noting that more than 50,000 Americans are killed annually in man’s other great transport invention. Locally, there are over 3,000 Australians killed in motor accidents each year and tens of thousands more injured. Like they say, the most dangerous part of flying is moving to the airport!
