My favourite with most tenderers is the A-4 Skyhawk. This aircraft is freely available, known in the region and is relatively cost-efficient to operate. There is talk that leased RNZAF aircraft (actually ex-RAN A-4Gs) may even be made available though the political implications of this are mind-boggling to say the least! (left) The Boeing Skyfox is yet another variant of the T-33 and is still at least three years away from being fully developed to the standard required for the RFT. However, its viable cost, twin engines, low maintenance requirement and expansive fuselage capacity make it a serious contender in the long term.

Fleet Support C. Dntract Set to Stimulate General Aviation Industry
The Defence Department’s Fleet Support contract is certainly hotting up as Australia’s largest GA operators vie for what will be the most important civilian contract let by DoD for many years.
Basis of the Fleet Support requirement emanates from the imminent withdrawal of RAAF Mirage Ill aircraft from active duty at NSW’s Williamtown air base. Traditionally, these aircraft, in concert to a lesser extent with 2 OCU’s Macchis, have been supplying the Navy with its required Fleet Support flying since the disbandment of the RAN Fleet Air Arm in 1983. Nowadays though, the demise of the Mirage and a reluctance to use the expensive F-18 for such a role (though Hornets will fly some Fleet Support missions as a part of the overall TFF task) has led Navy to put out for tender the inherent capability to undertake such missions.
