Ongoing Improvements Set to Further Enhance F-18 Capabilities
A factor of major importance in the RAAF selection of the Hornet was that the design provided the flexibility and growth potential to accommodate new capabilities and technologies that will evolve during its long life. This flexibility is demonstrated by the improvements being planned for fiscal years 1987 and 1988.
Increased Capabilities
Beginning with aircraft delivered to the US Navy in October 1987, a number of improvements will be incorporated. Fitted with the latest electronic protection devices against enemy aircraft and now able to use two new advanced missiles, the first F-18C prototype commenced flight tests on 4 August,J 986.
The US Navy has redesignated subsequent F-18s in the line as one-seat ‘C’ and two-seat ‘D’ models, the first step in an improvement programme designed to keep the Hornet fresh with the latest systems and equipment.
