McDonnell Douglas MD-11

On the second last day of 1986, the giant McDonnell Douglas Corporation bit the bullet and officially launched the long-mooted successor to the DC-10 – the MD-11 trijet.

The airline community had been waiting for the definitive launch of the MD-11 for more than a year and had seen the basic aircraft change in name, mission profile and level of technical sophistication several times since MDC first announced that it would definitely proceed with a DC-10 replacement back in the early eighties.
