1987 Major Airline Directory
When airlines are buying and selling aircraft it is generally a good indication that everything is well in the industry. This being the case then the ten months covered by this Directory can show some very impressive figures. Fleet turnover for the period was some sixty nine aircraft with forty three being delivered and twenty six sold. On top of this another nineteen aircraft were ordered at a cost of A$1,600 million. Thus bringing the backlog of aircraft on order to seventy seven.
New aircraft orders came from Qantas with one Boeing 767-238ER and four Boeing 747-438s, Ansett Worldwide with twelve Boeing 737-33As and Air Pacific with two ATR42s. New aircraft deliveries were dominated by Boeing with thirty six of the forty three coming from their stable. Most popular type was the Boeing 737-300 with twenty six units.
The two major international carriers in our region, Air New Zealand and Qantas both announced good profits. For the twelve months ending March 31st 1986, Air New Zealand’s operating profit was $NZ105 million. Though 31.3% down on the previous twelve months it was still the second best on record. Air New Zealand’s net profit of $NZ186.5 million was however a record. This figure being boosted by the sale of six Boeing 737-200s. Qantas reported an operating profit of $A44.4 million.
