Entry is via a forward airstair. The 1900 looks big on the ground, someth- ing that is a positive attribute when luring passengers away from traditional Friendship-type rural air services.
Airtest – Beech 1900
The Beech 1900 is the very latest commuter aircraft on offer in Australia, consequently, this twin turboprop capable of hauling 19 passengers and a full load of fuel over a 794nm stage length, with reserves, deserves a closer look.
The strong family resemblance to the King Air series is immediately evident. Basically, Beech have retained the King Air flight deck, the T-tail, the wing contour, the fuselage cross section and the venerable Pratt & Whitney engines. The fuselage was stretched to accommodate 19 passengers with adequate room for their luggage and cargo. Beech also modified the wing to incorporate a 30,000 hour safe life one piece main spar. Then to further enhance the aircraft’s flexibility Beech added dual air conditioning units, a three bus electrical system and Kevlar and Nomex interior structures. Tail-lets and stations were also added to improve aircraft stability and increase the centre of gravity travel, so important to a commuter aircraft’s operational flexibility.
Probably the most significant reason for the introduction of the Beech 1900 came in August 1982 with the introduction of a noteworthy change in the American FAR’s (Federal Aviation Regulations).
