Coalition Pilot Licencing Review Meets With Department Interest

A comprehensive review of pilot licencing is seen as one of the basic elements of the Coalition Parties’ aviation policy, one which will make learning to fly and maintaining your licence a much simpler and hopefully, cheaper, exercise.
The policy document outlines a general review of licencing, as well as specific aims such as the introduction of a ‘Recreational Pilot’s Licence’ and the rationalization of commercial licences. The Shadow Minister for Aviation, Mr Bruce Lloyd, was able to elaborate on the Coalition’s general aims, explaining that as it is increasingly difficult to learn to fly and even to maintain a licence because of economic pressures, it becomes more important for the government to ensure that licences and requirements are effective and reflect the needs of both the consumers and the industry, as well as maintaining safety standards.
“We are now working with a licencing system which basically has remained unchanged for years and which is in many cases simply not offering the flexibility which many pilots and certainly prospective pilots, find they need. The obvious reference is for the ‘recreational pilot’, who may not need a licence quite as sophisticated as the current Private Pilot’s Licence and hence our aim to introduce a ‘Recreational Pilot’s Licence’, which will allow people to fly for pleasure, safely and cheaply,” Mr Lloyd said.
