CSIRO F27 Aids Australian Space Research
Csiro Airborne Platform Provides Entree to Space Business
Australia’s only dedicated research aircraft, which is currently playing a key role in two joint international environmental studies, is set to figure prominently in projects aimed at developing new generation scanning and imaging instruments for incorporation in future satellite systems.
Dr Ken McCracken, Director of the CSIRO Office of Space Science and Applications (COSSA) which manages the aircraft, believes it could serve as one element in a range of opportunities now opening up in the space business. Australian aerospace, high technology and service companies, now gearing up to win space contracts and sell remote sensing and satellite space sector equipment to overseas customers, may benefit from these airborne proving trials.
Dr McCracken welcomes inquiries from research groups who may not be aware of the flexibility and research potential of the aircraft and from industrial groups interested in space technology development. The aircraft performs an increasingly important function in development of remote sensing technologies for environmental and rangeland studies, oceanography and mineral exploration. It presents opportunities for Australian instrument manufacturers and computing companies to collaborate with research bodies.
