General Aviation Could Be Hit Again for Additional Airport Revenue:

At the 15th Ansett Travel & Transport Writer’s Seminar held in Adelaide during early April, Mr Bill Swingler, Chief Executive of the Federal Airports Corporation (refer story p17 this issue) stated that virtually all GA airports were losing money and that their performance would have to be evaluated in the first year to develop ways in which the revenue shortfall could be satisfied.

Principal GA airports under the jurisdiction of the FAC will be Essendon, Moorabbin, Archerfield, Parafield and Jandakot. While at first this may sound like another round of imminent taxes and surcharges aimed directly at GA, it is worth noting that Mr Swingler estimated the overall shortfall from these airports at less than $2m from a projected first year operating budget in the region of $180m. Whether or not additional revenues can be gained without having to resort to increased operator surcharges is not yet known, though the FAC feels confident that it will be able to make far more non-aviation revenue from all airports now that they are out of the ownership of the Government.
