Of biblical proportions, the 862 page two volume May Report though dealing essentially with the future of Australia’s Two Airline Policy also includes much interesting data on a wide range of factors affecting our air transport environment.
The overall prognosis of the Report was detailed in our March edition, though it would be remiss of us not to report in greater detail on some of the many issues that determined the overall theme of the enquiry. One of the most interesting aspects of the background database that was the basis of the enquiry was Australia’s first professional in-depth analysis of who flies, how often they fly, and why.
The Report’s findings are based on the results of two special passenger surveys conducted through 1985, one by the enquiry’s own trained personnel and one by the McNair Anderson and Media Monitors group. Both surveys were heavily analysed and subsequently used with information derived directly from the airlines that had previously, for commercial reasons, not been publicly available.
