Engine maintenance has always been a costly and time-consuming element of aircraft ownership. The new Cobra video borescope allows engineers greater flexibility in inspecting engines in addition to saving time. If there is one thing about the modern jet engine then it’s that it’s advanced. Ironically, what isn’t nearly as advanced as the new breed of ‘burners’ are the tools with which engineers maintain, inspect and repair these expensive powerplants. That is up till now and the release of an ingenious ‘flying’ borescope.
Produced by Axxiom Aerospace of the US and marketed locally through Panametrics Pty Ltd, the revolutionary Cobra RPB 2010 is the world’s only remotely piloted video borescope that literally is able to fly through the internals of an engine.
What this equates to is a substantial saving in time, expense and an ability to transmit the video from a remote site (where for instance an aircraft may be grounded) to the primary maintenance base where key maintenance personnel can make a judgement that may be beyond the expertise of the on site engineer. No doubt every airline or major GA engineer will be able to recall plenty of similar occurrences. The cost in downtime, perhaps unnecessary dismantling of the engine plus the need to fly additional expertise to the remote site in most cases would be obviated by use of this new and unique video borescope.
