Overflight Rights – An Awaiting Pandora’s Box

On 15 September, 1986, UK and Canadian aviation negotiators sat down in London for a last-ditch effort to resolve their longstanding differences.

The attempt was in vain; the scheduled two day meeting broke up that same afternoon and it then became inevitable that the UK would send notice, cancelling the UK-Canadian air services agreement. It did so on 7 October, to become effective 12 months later.

Normally, the matter would have remained bilateral. While it is rare for a country unilaterally to terminate an aviation agreement (but not the first time for the UK), resulting problems scarcely overflow onto other countries.
